A solid mahogany door moves with heat and humidity differently than fiberglass or steel, so the chemistry changes with the material.

• Solid wood: oak, cedar, mahogany: We sand off the sun-damaged surface fibers, apply a deep-penetrating stain, then build three or more coats of high-build marine-grade spar urethane over the top. Spar urethane carries UV absorbers and stays flexible enough to move with the wood, which is exactly what a bare stain cannot do.
• Fiberglass entry systems: Plenty of newer homes have fiberglass doors molded to look like wood. Those need a bonding primer and UV-shielded gel stains, which is what brings back the grain look without the peeling you see on amateur repaints.
• Steel doors: Steel can reach 140 degrees in direct summer sun. We use industrial direct-to-metal coatings that hold adhesion at that temperature instead of bubbling.

Different chemistry for each substrate

Front door resurfacing requires different chemistry for each substrate. Wood takes penetrating stain sealed with spar urethane, fiberglass needs a bonding primer with UV-shielded gel stain, and steel requires direct-to-metal coatings rated for the surface temperatures it reaches in direct sun. Matching the coating to the material is what prevents peeling.

How do you resurface a door in one day?

You cannot leave the front of a house open overnight, so the job is built to start and finish the same day.

   Hardware comes off: Handles, deadbolts, and smart locks are removed rather than taped around. Taping leaves a ridge at every edge, and removal is the only way to get full coverage and a clean line.

   Dust-controlled sanding: We sand off the failed clear coat and grey oxidation right there in the entry using HEPA vacuum sanders, so the dust does not settle across your floors and furniture.

   Grain filling, optional: On higher-end doors we can fill the grain first for a glass-smooth finish. It adds time and it is worth it on a mahogany door, less so on a builder-grade one.

These three symptoms mean your door's finish has failed and the wood underneath is already at risk:

• It has gone grey or silver: A dull silver cast means the UV protection is already gone and the wood underneath is weathering. This is the point where refinishing still works and waiting starts costing more.
• The clear coat is flaking: Peeling film lets moisture reach the wood. Left long enough, that is what causes warping, and a warped door is a replacement rather than a refinish.
• The lock catches: A door that suddenly sticks or a smart lock that stops aligning is usually a door that has swelled or warped from sun and moisture. Resurfacing and rehanging often clears it up.

How long does a resurfaced door last?

On a west or south-facing door in this climate, expect two to four years before the film starts dulling. Shaded and north-facing doors commonly reach five to seven.

The important part is what happens at that point. A maintenance recoat does not require stripping the door again, just a clean, a light scuff, and a fresh coat. Let it go past about year four and the film has broken down enough that you are back to a full strip.
